Our project for the Events Center located in the historic center of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, is developed around several fundamental premises.
The second premise is that the conservation of the ruins should be achieved by their covering. By roofing over the two churches of the Convent, the chapel of the tertiary order and the main church, their volume and their interior space is recovered and the ruins are no longer simply contemplated as aesthetic objects, but become embedded into useful architecture.
The third premise is that the project should develop around a series of cloisters. Starting with the existing historic cloister, the different elements of the total building program are associated with different cloisters. This device gives clarity to the distribution of the program, and allows much to be located on a higher floor, leaving the ground open to and accessible from the four streets that surround the block.
The fourth premise is that the entrance floor should remain largely free of construction in order to preserve the ruins that make up the Archaeological Park and make them easily accessible to visitors. Above the ruins there is a lightweight construction that guarantees the ruins’ integrity and allows for their contemplation.
