Rethinking the House

These are three single-family houses in Madrid, each on a ½ acre sloping lot. The houses’ floorplan is an “L” shape: with one arm parallel to the access road and the other perpendicular creating a courtyard.

The houses have been arranged to maximize views of the distant Sierra, while also defining private front and rear gardens.

One of the priorities of this architectural design was to reduce circulation spaces to a minimum, with common living areas are placed in the central part of the house. There is also a ground-level terrace accessible from the living room, covered with a wooden pergola that provides shade in summer and allows natural light to shine through in winter. There is a terrace on the upper floor.
