Ten Women Architects in Construction | Belén Moneo for Tectónica

In the interview, Belén reflects on her initial decision not to pursue a career in architecture, despite her family’s deep tradition in the field. However, her passion for physics, art, and eventually architecture led her to reconsider her path.

Belén discusses the challenges of balancing the time and demands of architecture, as well as the rewards of working on projects that are both personally and professionally enriching.

One of the first significant projects she worked on with Jeff was the renovation of a loft in New York, which tested not only her creativity but also her ability to manage and solve complex challenges. Another key formative experience in her career was her time at the Museum of Art and Architecture in Stockholm, under the guidance of Rafael Moneo, her father.

Belén views architecture not just as a profession, but as a way to explore and enhance the human experience through space. “Architecture is the perfect synthesis between seemingly opposing disciplines that share an interest in space and the phenomena that occur within it,” she mentions in the interview. This philosophy is reflected in each of her projects, where she aims not only to solve technical problems but also to create spaces that inspire and transform.
